Football thought it could prevail. Teams and players thought that they were invincible. However, it was only a matter of time before the pandemic caught up to college football teams as well as NFL teams.
The SEC has had it worst of all with the number of games being postponed and canceled continuing to grow week by week.
Entering week 11, the college football slate has been hit the hardest by COVID-19 cases and protocols in the 2020 season. Saturday’s slate of games will have been affected the most thus far with 15 games being canceled or postponed so far as the numbers continue to rise around the country. Games for sure canceled our Air Force at Wyoming, Ohio State at Maryland, North Texas at UAB, Gardner Webb at Charlotte, in Utah at UCLA. Other games like Auburn at Mississippi State, Texas A&M at Tennessee, Missouri at Georgia, Pitt at Georgia Tech, and Louisiana Monroe at Arkansas State have all been moved to December 12.
This weeks number of cancellations and postponements is five more than last weeks of only 10 games. Thirty percent of scheduled games this week have been either postponed or canceled.
The COVID-19 pandemic has created a national imbalance in the number of games the teams have played from conference to conference. Now, conferences are having even more internal and external issues being that certain teams have to play each other before playoffs and championships.
In conference USA, Western Kentucky is scheduled to play its ninth game this Saturday while league peer Rice is scheduled to play its third game against Louisiana Tech, which has just been postponed.
In terms of the Big Ten, many of the conferences teams are getting set for their fourth game of the season while teams like Wisconsin are still hoping to play just a second game because of the COVID-19 pandemic canceling the team’s other two games. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out if cases and cancellations continue to grow as the days go on.
